Tuition Fees - Tuition fees range from 9,000 to 30,000 Euros per year depending on the course and institution.

FAQ's

Northern Ireland

Q.1  Will an Irish visa allow me to travel to Northern Ireland?

No. If you wish to travel to Northern Ireland, you will require a UK visa.

Northern Ireland consists of Counties Antrim, Armagh, Derry, Down, Fermanagh and Tyrone.

If you are travelling to the Republic of Ireland, and you intend to also visit Northern Ireland and return to the Republic, you must obtain a multiple-entry Irish visa and a UK visa.

If your main destination is Northern Ireland but you arrive in, and depart from the Republic of Ireland, you must first obtain a UK visa, and then a multi-entry Irish visa.

Q.2  I hold a valid UK Visa. Do I need an Irish visa to travel to the Republic of Ireland?

Ireland and the UK have different visa requirements. You should first Check if you need a Visa for Ireland.

In general, a valid UK visa does not allow travel to Ireland. For exceptions to this, please click here.

Q.3  I live in Northern Ireland and hold a valid UK visa. Do I need an Irish visa to enter the Republic even on a short trip?

Yes. 

You must show Immigration Officials at border crossings that you have a valid Irish visa.

Q.4  I am legally resident in Northern Ireland, where can I apply for an Irish visa?

Q.5  I hold a valid Schengen visa. Do I need a separate Irish visa to come to the Republic of Ireland?

Yes. Ireland is not part of the Schengen Acquis.

Q.6  I am an Irish national. My spouse / civil partner is a visa required national.  Do they need a visa to visit/live in Ireland?

<Applying for an Irish visa outside of country of residence

Q.7  I will be travelling to, or I am already in, another country on a short visit before travelling to Ireland. Can I apply for my Irish visa in the Irish Embassy/Consulate/Visa Office there?

No (unless Q8 applies to you). Visa applications should be made in your country of residence. If however, there are valid reasons or extenuating circumstances which prevented you from doing so prior to your departure, you should discuss the matter with staff at the nearest Irish Embassy, Consulate, or Visa Office.

Q.8  I am the immediate family member of a national of an EU Member State. I will be travelling to, or I am already in, another country on a short visit before travelling to Ireland. Can I apply for my Irish visa in the Irish Embassy/Consulate there?

Yes. Your application may be submitted to any Embassy/Consulate however, the staff there do not have to process the application, and may refer the application to the INIS in Dublin, for processing.

Q.9  Can my application be processed more quickly?

In order to ensure that all visa applicants receive fair and equal treatment, applications are dealt with in the order that they are received.

In exceptional cases, where it can be demonstrated that extenuating circumstances exist, applications may be processed ahead of schedule.

Children

Q.10  Does my child need a separate visa to travel with me?

Yes. Each child must have a visa in their own name. This applies even if the child is included on your passport. A separate Online Visa Application must be completed for each child and the relevant fee paid. The fee for a visa is the same for adults and children.

E-mails claiming to be from an office of the Irish Naturalisation & Immigration Service or the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs

Q.11  I have received an email that claims to be from an office of the Irish Naturalisation & Immigration Service or the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs. I have concerns that it may be visa scam. Is it genuine?

No. If you receive a request alleging to come from an INIS office or a Department of Foreign Affairs embassy requesting bank details or money, please contact visamail@justice.ieto investigate.

Criminal record

Q.12  I have a criminal record. May I apply for a visa?

Yes. Full details of your criminal record must be provided with your application.

However, please note that a history of serious crimes, serious breaches of immigration law or presentation of false documentation or making of false statements in support of an application can, of themselves, be reasons for refusal of a visa for which an appeal may not be allowed. This is the norm in many countries.

Refusal of my visa application

Q.13  My visa has been refused and I am waiting on a refund from the university/college. Can the INIS help?

The refund of fees is a civil matter i.e. a private matter between you and the university/college. The Irish Immigration & Naturalisation Service has no involvement in such matters.

Education System:-

Universities: There are seven Government‐funded universities providing Undergraduate, postgraduate & research degree programmes.

Institute of Technology’s: There are 14 government‐funded institutes of technology. They offer a wide variety of programmes which can be both academically and vocationally focused.

Colleges: Mostly private, they offer a range of programmes including professional certificates, diplomas, undergraduate & postgraduate degrees in a diverse range of subjects.

Intakes: January (for colleges only), and September.
• Students are allowed to work 20 hours per week during studies and 40 hours per week during vacations.
• All master’s and bachelor(honours) students get one year and ordinary bachelors students get 1 Year open Job search Visa. If the student gets a job during this duration then he gets additional two years work Visa.

Entry Criteria: -

Bachelors:
• Minimum 70% in class 12th for universities,
• 60% for Institute of Technologies,
• 50% for Private Institutions with IELTS 6.0 with no band less than 5.5 Bands & PTE, Overall 52, with no band less than 50.

Masters:
• Minimum 60% in Graduation with IELTS 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 Bands. PTE 60, with no band less than 54.
• Generally, Universities of Ireland do not offer pre‐sessional courses hence, students not meeting the English language requirements, need to re‐take the test and improve their IELTS scores. Dublin Business School is exception as they offer 1 term and 3 term pre‐sessional English Language courses depending upon the IELTS score.

Post Study Work Rights:- The Third Level Graduate Scheme is designed to allow foreign graduates from outside the European Economic Area who acquired a primary, masters or doctorate degree from an Irish third level educational institution to remain in Ireland for six months to one year period (depending on the level of the course undertaken), starting on the date Upon which the person receives their exam results. The purpose of the permission to remain under this Scheme is to seek employment and gain a Green Card or Work Permit.
The period for the Graduate Employment Scheme was extended from 6 to 12 months, with effect from 28th October 2010, for students whose degree is at a minimum of level 8 on the National Framework of Qualifications. Students on level 7 will only be offered the 6 month Scheme, as before.

Visas: - Visas can be obtained in two ways:
1) Normal student visa‐ processing time 4‐6 weeks.
2) Through Approval in principle scheme‐ processing time 5‐7 weeks.

APPROVAL IN PRINCIPLE SCHEME:
Under this scheme, applicants for a study visa from India, who have been accepted on to a HETAC (the Higher Education and Training Awards Council in Ireland) approved course, can apply for a study visa without having to pay the requisite college fees in advance. Fees need only be paid when the visa application has been approved. Once evidence of the Electronic Fee Transfer has been submitted to the visa office New Delhi the visa will be issued. Electronic Fund Transfer is the only acceptable method of fee payment recognized by the Irish visa office, New Delhi.

VISIT VISA /TOURIST VISA

• You can apply for a visit (family/friends) visa if you would like to travel to Ireland to visit family or friends who are resident in Ireland.
• You can apply for a visit visa up to 3 months before your date of travel to Ireland.
• If you are visiting another state prior to travelling to Ireland, you must have the relevant visa for that state in your passport before applying for an Irish visa.

How to Apply: - You must apply online for a visa. When you have completed the online application process, you must follow the instructions on the summary application form that is created by the online system. The summary form will contain information on where you are to submit your supporting documentation.
The summary form which you must print, sign and date must be submitted with your supporting documentation.
You may be required to provide your Biometric Information as part of the application process.

Travelling to Ireland as a tourist: If you will be visiting Ireland for a short period (less than 3 months) and you require a visa, you must present the following documents with your completed and signed visa application form:
• Full details of the reason for your visit - for example to see friends or family.
• If you plan to stay in a hotel, you will need written confirmation of the hotel booking containing the dates of your proposed stay.
• A letter from a reference in Ireland inviting you to come to Ireland. The letter should include contact details for the reference, proposed dates for your stay and details of where you will be staying during your visit.
• Written undertakings from both yourself and your reference, confirming that you will observe the conditions of your visa, that you will not become a burden on the State, and that you will leave the State on the expiration of your permission to remain.
• Details of your relationship to your reference, or how you are known to each other, along with supporting evidence of this.
• If your reference is not an Irish citizen, evidence of their permission to remain in Ireland. (That is, a copy of their Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) card and copy of their passport showing immigration stamps)
• Evidence of how you intend to finance your trip and support yourself for the duration of your visit, allowing for any unforeseen events such as illness. A detailed bank statement, covering a 6 month period immediately prior to your visa application, and showing sufficient funds to cover all costs, is required.
• Evidence that you are obliged to return to your country of residence. This evidence can take the form of a letter from your employer detailing when you are expected to return to work or a letter from a college specifying the date on which your course of study re-commences. If you do not work or study, a letter from a person in authority may be sufficient.
